McCarver said he had seen the photographs but did not believe they do enough to honor Torre’s integral role in leading the team to four World Series championships. “Retiring his number would mean embracing his legacy,” he said. He noted during the game on Saturday that no player has worn Torre’s No. 6 since he left the Yankees.
Tim McCarver backtracked Monday from the comparison he made Saturday between the Yankees’ treatment of Joe Torre’s legacy as manager to the way World War II despots, “primarily in Russia and Germany,” airbrushed former generals out of photographs “after they had shot ’em.”
There are photographs of Torre on different levels of the stadium. On Friday,
Florida Marlins Hats Sale, a photograph of Torre and Steinbrenner was shown on the main video board at the stadium accompanied by Torre’s words, “It’s only fitting that he went out as a world champ.”
McCarver said that he made his remarks on Saturday on Old-Timers’ Day in the context of discussing how well the Yankees treat their retired players.

Cheap Montreal Expos Hats, the Yankees’ director of media relations, called the Fox truck on Saturday to complain about McCarver’s comments. In a statement issued Monday, Fox Sports said that McCarver “regrets” using the World War II analogy, and “given his contrition and flawless 25-year track record, we’re comfortable that no further action is necessary.”
McCarver made his comments during Fox’s broadcast of the Tampa Bay-Yankees game. It followed the melancholy celebration of Old-Timers’ Day, which came shortly after the deaths of George Steinbrenner and Bob Sheppard.

McCarver cited the Yankees’ failure to mention Torre when the team said goodbye to old Yankee Stadium. On Saturday, he said, “there’s no sign of Torre” at the new stadium.
