Taking a Chance on Thames in the Outfield

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — When Jason Bartlett’s liner to left evaded the outstretched glove of the Yankees’ Marcus Thames on Friday night,Baltimore Orioles Hats, I’m sure more than a few of you were thinking that Brett Gardner would have caught it. Manager Joe Girardi thought so,Atlanta Braves Hats sale, too.
“To me,DC Comics & Marvel Hats Sale, he probably does,” Girardi said before Saturday’s game against the Rays. But he added: “Marcus did everything he could to get to it. I didn’t have a problem with the dive.”
Every time Girardi starts Thames in left field, he takes that chance. Gardner is faster and a better defender than Thames, but the Yankees want Thames’s bat in the lineup against left-handers. At least for now.
For Girardi, starting Thames against Boston’s Jon Lester was an easy decision. Thames had homered in his previous at-bat against Lester,NFL Hats Sale, Girardi wanted to integrate him into the lineup and there was much less ground to cover in Fenway Park’s left field.
The Yankees begin their next trip in Oakland, Calif.,2009 World Baseball Classic hats sale, which should present an interesting challenge.
