Thumbs up Set Sparring | Exercise and Fitness

Where do you buy your sparring gear and is this website legit ? My brother needs sparring gear and it’s pricey to buy it at his school, i found a Adidas sparring set for 160 bucks, which is 100 dollars cheaper: http://www.blackbeltshop.com/ Is that place legit ? Thanks He’s a poom belt in Taekwondo . He has gear that we payed about 280 bucks for but he has outgrown in. It depends on what piece of equipment you are looking for. Honestly I haven’t used any Adidas made equipment, but from looking at the pics of the set you mentioned on that site, it appears to be pretty cheaply made, although the overall price isn’t bad. Guess you get what you pay for. Does his equipment have to be WTF approved? What art is he studying? If its just for class then I’m assuming he is free to shop any brands and such correct? Here’s some possible alternatives. Shin Guards Cheap: http://www.revgear.com/product/55/shin_guards –Somewhat difficult to pull off, but very snug when in use. Cheap and not as flimsy as that foam stuff the adidas ones you linked are made of. Cheap alternative, though can find better if you can put up the money. More Pricy: http://www.mmawarehouse.com/Combat-S...p/csi-1135.htm or http://www.muaythai-fighting.com/twi...rotection.html –Notice how those cover the entire foot, unlike the ones you listed. Those small bones on the foot are the most likely to be broken when sparring. The material is much studier than the foam adidas as well Helmet: http://www.muaythai-fighting.com/mua...-headgear.html –Here’s a whole section, nearly all of which are better construction than the one you listed. AND if you look at the separate price of the adidas helmet, many of these are CHEAPER. Those 42 Twin (HGL-5) are a good mix of value and quality. Yes, you probably get a better price on the adidas when purchased as a set as listed on your link, but helmet isn’t exactly the piece of gear I’d skip out on quality in order to save a buck. Chest Protector: http://www.elitemma.com/mma-body-protector.html That Ringside protector is pretty cheap. My coach has that one, its much sturdier than those lame Tae Kwon Do ones that really have no structure. As you can see, chest pieces can go up quite high in price depending on brand. http://www.muaythai-fighting.com/mua...rotection.html Forearm: Personally I don’t use forearm light up air force one shields but if I were to do so, I’d go with either http://www.blackbeltshop.com/forearm_armor.htm or http://www.blackbeltshop.com/forearm_elbow_armor.htm The foam ones would be alright and they appear to be thicker, but those have straps rather than a full cuff like those 2. While the cuffs are more difficult to pull off, they will remain in place better while in use. I purposely linked multiple sites so you have an idea of other places to shop. Check around for all pieces and see which ones have better deals or sales. Overall, many brands are of similar quality, but nike air force ones hopefully now you have some better idea on what to look for. Shin Guards ideally need to be very sturdy as this part of the body can take the most forceful of the blows. You’d want them if at all possible to cover the entire foot. Body protection if used, should also be very sturdy due to the amount of force a kick to the ribs can deliver (I’ve had broken rib from a kick, its not fun). Helmet for obvious reasons I dislike those flimsy foam constructions that adidas has. If you wear a helmet, it obscures your vision and you WILL get hit MORE while wearing. So with that in mind, get the better quality you can afford. I like the Twin ones personally, more dense material. Arms as I said I personally don’t use, but I like things to stay in place and straps are notorious for having to be constantly readjusted. Those ones that cover the elbow are somewhat nice, as often when you block a kick with the arm, its the elbow that makes the impact (if you are blocking correctly that is). Obviously, if you can order from the same site, shipping costs can be reduced. And judge based on his level of contact. Without knowing what he is studying, I can only give you overall ideas. If its light contact, then cheaper equipment may be suitable. I do full contact (MMA). As such, I personally don’t skimp on quality. Though with that in mind, I have single pieces of equipment that are almost as much as that entire Adidas set. I need that protection though.
