You might want to think twice the next time you discard that Saran wrap box or empty detergent bottle, lest it end up as a source of material for a fashion show.
" 'The Trashion Show' is a fashion show using recycled or discarded materials in a creative and fresh way," said host Charleston Pierce.
Sponsored by Aveda and Cinta Aveda Institute, the event brought together 700 attendees last Sunday and raised $25,000 for the Clean Water Fund.
Seventy volunteer models strutted across the Ruby Skye stage in outfits threaded and sewn together by professional hair stylists, students and eco-friendly apparel designers.
Maricarmen Medina, 25, modeled an intricate basket-weave, corset bodice gown with a full tulip skirt adorned with rosettes made of folded and cinched magazine pages, brown recycled thread

"We all worked together in putting this outfit together

"It took three days and six employees at the salon to finish it, and all the while still tending to our regular work schedule and clients."
Thirty-five salons from Northern California participated in the show, each sending down two conceptual looks inspired by natural elements of earth, wind, fire and infinity.
The salons had the option of pairing with outside help to execute their clothing designs, but most opted to design their pieces themselves, and did quite well for nonapparel designers.
The second half of the show showed designs made by students of Cinta Aveda Institute, and from Haute Trash

The majority of the pieces were cleverly crafted

But Shaun Muscolo of Elvira Mental Werks from Haute Trash designed two knitted dresses that at a glance could be mistaken for actual yarn and not plastic gray trash bags. Her pieces looked so innocuous that they could fit into Club Monaco's current spring collection.
The public charity event was the first of its kind and took two months to execute, said Aveda Executive Director Sheryl Holladay, who spearheaded the show. The hairstylists, makeup artists, clothing designers, eco-friendly merchants, and their family and friends who made up the bulk of the audience came from as far as Chico and Reno.
"Last year, we organized a walk across the Golden Gate Bridge to raise money. This year we did a fashion show, with music, dancing and creativity

Matie Natov, 21, floated down the runway in a patchwork-collaged, strapless floor-length ball gown made up of day-to-day household discarded materials such as empty laundry detergent bottles, egg cartons, cracker boxes, aluminum cans and Chinese takeout boxes. It was designed by her sister
