Christopher Paunil leans over a cutting table and puts down six sketches of
prom dresses that he wants to make.
The 28-year-old bridal gown designer is meeting a buyer in a week’s time, so he wants to show off his versatility with samples beyond wedding gowns.
Susan Langdon
Wedding dresses, executive director of the Toronto Fashion Incubator

grad dresses 2011, peppers him with questions.
What colour will he use? What type of fabric? Will the gowns be long or short? Is it for high school or university proms?
Langdon knows her stuff. She ran the Zakura evening wear line before taking on the job at the non-profit small business centre 17 years ago.
She tells Paunil to concentrate on making three good dresses instead of six. She offers colour ideas for spring, and design suggestions, dismissing one sketch as not original enough and another as too sophisticated for a teenager.
This brief conversation in the domed century-old Music Building at Exhibition Place reveals exactly what the non-profit organization is all about―helping designers learn the business of fashion, everything from selling goods to hiring models to filing taxes.
Founded in 1987, the organization was created by the former city of Toronto as way to boost the industry, which was once the second-largest industrial employer

“City council had the foresight to realize the importance of job creation and job retention

The model has been copied by cities like New York, Los Angeles, Melbourne and Amsterdam.
But during tough economic times, the fashion incubator also worries about its own survival. About 40 per cent of its annual operating budget of nearly $700,000 comes from a city grant. Langdon said they have been given strong hints from city hill to expect a 12 per cent to 15 per cent cut in its grant next year, given planned belt-tightening under the new Ford administration.
Revenues from annual memberships
cheap long prom dresses, ranging from $130 a year to $65 a year for students, help to boost its budget. Members can benefit from one-on-one mentoring for tips and advice, as well as get access to industry newsletters and websites.
The centre also has 10 studios for its resident program where designers like Paunil can rent private workspace for up to three years as they kick-start their businesses.
In Paunil’s case, he pays $500 a month in rent, giving him round-the-clock access to the studio
A-Line prom dresses, including use of sewing machines, cutting tables and professional irons. He has set up a small couch in his tiny space where he can grab a nap when he’s working.
