The history of shoes began when man realized that he needs protection for his feet from rocks, sand, harsh weather conditions. But this is not the single reason why shoes were invented. Ladies, probably you wonder when high heels appeared. Their origin is in Venice, starting the 16th century. High heels were designed to wear on events as weddings, athletics and dance performances. In the 15th century, wealthy Italian and French women purchased decorative footwear called chompines. The chompines are called today stilettos, an Italian word since the 1950s.
As time passed, the design of the shoes started to evolve and comfort was not longer the single property of shoes. Material, design, quality, type of the shoe was taken into consideration when purchasing one. According to Wikipedia, today shoes are categorized in classes as: clogs, platforms, sandals, loafers, boots, slippers, boat shoes, athletic shoes, orthopedic, dance, espadrilles, moccasins, oxfords, pumps and balmorals.
So if back in time, shoe was a luxury, now only taste and necessity decide what kind of shoe to purchase.
