Prom fashions reflect old and new

The seminal occasion allows young ladies to play dress up in a big way, whether they have a Prince Charming or not. It is also an official way of letting the world know she knows how to strike high fashion notes with style and grace.
This prom season is a happy marriage between traditional and contemporary looks that showcase an array of customary colors plus size prom dresse 2011, modern hues and decorative prints long prom dresses, all of which sometimes show up in daring designs.
"We've done lots of fuchsia, purple, a little bit of black, prints and patterns," said Renee Wikstrom, owner of Magnolia Bridal & Formal Wear at 318 Main St. in Conway. "We've done a lot of ballroom gowns. I think they are reminders of a softer, romantic time. Every girl needs to have at least one Cinderella dress for prom."
Amanda Roof cheap long prom dresses, owner of Amanda's Collection at 328 Main St. in Conway, said this year's prom looks run the gamut.
There are long gowns that can sweep the floor better than brooms and short dresses reminiscent of the ones found on the tiny ballerinas found in music boxes.
Asymmetrical backs, rhinestone-encrusted bodices, flowing trains, ruffled bottoms cheap prom dresses 2011, multicolored patterns and big satiny bows are but a few of the numerous details that accented this year's gowns.
"Anything goes," Roof said. "There is a great divide - some girls want long gowns and some girls want short gowns. This year remains the same as most prom years with girls preferring any shade of pink and turquoise. Girls like those colors because they look good for pictures, and they look good on many skin tones. Those colors also look good in the spring. Girls go for bright, fun colors."
Yessence Lewis is such a girl. The 16-year-old cheerleader who is a junior at St. James High School chose a yellow prom dress.
"I went looking for yellow because everybody always says it looks good on my complexion," Lewis said. "I went with a long gown because I'm short, and it makes me look taller."
In talking with her friends, Lewis discovered they, too, picked dresses with vibrant colors or fail-proof shades such as black, blue and pink.
Stashia Fore, an 18-year-old senior at Aynor High School, is still hunting for her perfect dress, but she has yet to decide on a color.
"My dress has got to be cheap," Fore said. "I want a short dress because it's easier and convenient. When your dress is short, you don't have to worry about people stepping on your dress or you stepping on your own dress. Long dresses get in the way. If someone steps on your dress, you get mad because you don't won't them stepping on it."
Melissa Grullon is digging multicolored dresses with rich shades of blue, purple, red and green, but her dream dress is hard to come by. She knows where to get it, but if she orders the prom dress it won't arrive until after her prom has passed. Grullon cheap prom dresses, an 18-year-old senior at Carolina Forest High School, is still hopeful she will find her ideal dress.
"It's back to the drawing board," said Evette Cruz, her mom. "We've got to find a dress she loves."
Regardless of the girl, area prom store retailers are excited that designers are keeping every shape and size in mind when crafting dresses.
"Just because you are a size 22 doesn't mean you can't wear an off-the-shoulder dress," said Roof, who sells sizes zero to 30. "I recently sold a size 28 dress to a young lady from Florence. She tried on and tried on, but she left with a dress she loved. It wasn't like a grandma dress, either. It was a beautiful dress Designer Prom Dresses, and it made me feel good that she felt good."
Each girl, be it spoken or unspoken, wants to wear a dress that no other girl will wear on prom night.
Stores on the Grand Strand adhere to a strict rule of only selling one of each dress to each school, which helps ensure no two Cinderellas will rock the same gown at the same school.
"I don't know what kind of color I will end up with, but I know I want to be different and put a different look out there," Fore said. "I don't want something that is like anybody else's dress. I know I do like prints."
Designers of prom gowns must be eavesdropping on their potential clients because they have answered the call in delivering unique styles with safe and sassy shades.
In its 2011 Spring Prom and Pageant Catalog, Riva Designs highlight 40 pages of prom attire that speaks to the color inclinations and type of wear girls want.
There are conventional shades of pink and blue gowns encrusted with intricate beads or bedazzled with rhinestones and colorful faux gems.
Eileen Labunski prom dresses 2011, a sales associate at HerDashery at 1019 Fourth Ave. in Conway, said girls should practice being minimalist if they wear dresses that are heavily beaded at the chest and shoulders.
"If the dress has a lot of beading at the top, you don't need a necklace," Labunski said. "If the dress is more simple, you can get more elaborate with the jewelry. I also think long gloves for sleeveless gowns are a nice touch. They are more popular than they use to be."
What is always popular, too, is affordability.
While some girls and their parents can afford to splurge on gowns, others are more conservative with their cash.
Allison Lewis, Yessence's mother, said there are plenty of beautiful gowns for girls out there that are more reasonable.
"Parents should have a discussion with their daughters at home cheap short prom dresses, before leaving to shop for prom prom dresses, about what their limits are," said Lewis, who limited the amount she would spend on her daughter's gown to $200. "Let me know what you can do before you go out. Then, when you go to a place, your daughter won't feel bad and the parents won't feel bad."
Allison Lewis said her daughter was on board with her budgeting and understands the current economic climate.
"She told me she wanted to use her shoes and jewelry from last year," said Lewis, an employee of H&R Block.
Retailers of prom dresses have sales on looks from the previous season, which are bargain basement deals compared to pricier looks. For example, Amanda's Collection has discontinued prom dresses priced at $69.
Once parents have budgeted what they will pay for their daughter's attire, those in the business of selling prom dresses said they should be respectful of what their girls want to wear.
"I think the most important thing to remember is that no matter what kind of gown a girl chooses, it should be one in which she is most comfortable," Labunski said. "Parents should remember that it is her day, not their day."
