The Differences Between Traditional Japanese Kimonos and Kimono Style Dresses

Kimono style dresses have gained popularity in the western world possibly due to the fascination westerners have on Japanese culture. Westerners are most fascinated by the culture of Geishas and with this comes the fascination with their attire.
Kimono style dresses are inspired by traditional Japanese kimonos but do not have the traditional obi. They are also typically made of a lighter fabric, and are usually shorter. These type of dresses borrow the V-neck cut and long sleeves. However, for wearability purposes, most of them have been shortened to the 3/4-arm length.
Kimono style dresses also usually incorporate the separate paneling seen on some kimonos ######y clubwear, where the material differs on the ends of the arms, the waist, and the neckline. Also, for wearability and comfort, most of them are shorter in length, either above the knee, right on the knee, or slightly below the knee, whereas traditional kimonos usually are floor length.
And lastly, the kimono style dress does not require the large amounts of fabric that a traditional kimono requires. A traditional kimono takes a pretty extensive amount of time to even put on bandage dress, whereas the kimono style dress can usually be easily worn and taken off with very little time and effort. Its fabric is also more lightweight and may not have intricate details.
With the advent of movies like Memoirs of a Geisha showcasing Japanese attire, many western fashion designers and consumers of fashion flocked to the kimono style dress.
Indeed, the kimono style dress has even been featured in Hollywood films. The movie, Music and Lyrics, featured a beautiful kimono style dress in orange shades. It was worn by celebrity and fashion icon, Drew Barrymore, for her lead role in the film.
After its release, there was a dramatic increase in searches for "kimono style dresses" on internet search engines. From large geometric prints to small floral details club dresses, the kimono style dress corset tops, with it's figure flattering shape is sure to be a crowd pleaser amongst both young and old.
