Griffey Shoes Memorial Day Crafts by Caley Walsh

American has been through so much in the last decade. As President Obama’s campaign so effectively demonstrated, we Americans wants and need renewed patriotism and pride in our country. Memorial Day is an opportunity to remember those that have served America, giving their lives for this country’s cherished ideals. I like many others will be observing the holiday and showing my pride with Memorial Day Crafts.

Though I do not have any relatives that I know of that have died in militarily service for America,Nike Air Max Jr 2011, I recognize the ultimate sacrifice these men and women made and want to honor them. These Memorial Day crafts will be donated to local veteran organizations and community centers for Memorial Day events. Many veteran organizations decorate the graves of soldiers, and I hope to contribute a few patriotic craft ideas to these efforts.

In addition, patriotic crafts will help decorate my home for Memorial Day. A BBQ will become a bit more meaningful with patriotic accents and other Memorial Day crafts for the BBQ. Amidst our gathering, we will take a moment to observe the National Moment of Remembrance in silence at 3pm. I will share the story of the first Memorial Day, when after the Civil War,Griffey Shoes, freed slaves helped build a graveyard for Union soldiers in Charleston and decorated the graves each year. They risked their lives in turbulent time to honor the men that died for their freedom. How’s that for inspiring?

I did not always celebrate Memorial Day as I should. When I was growing up in the years before 9/11, war seemed so historically distant. Although the Gulf War was going on at the time, relatively few Americans died in that conflict. My grandfather was the one that told me of the importance of Memorial Day and encouraged me to create Memorial Day crafts. Along with other veterans, he created bouquets and centerpieces of Red Poppies, the official flower of Memorial Day,Air Max 2009, to help honor those who died in service and help support disabled veterans.

My grandfather, Roscoe danced his way to 98 years of age, an active community member and notorious flirt. He loved to travel,Nike Dunk High Heels, play checkers and tell stories. He told me how he whisked my grandmother, whom he was married to for over 50 years, away to town in a wheelbarrow. Shortly before he passed away, I recorded his life story and he supplied many of the pictures. Roscoe told me about his short time in the military, serving in the Korean War. Thankfully he returned unhurt, but sadly pointed out that almost 37,000 Americans died in that war alone.

Now,Griffey Shoes 2011, I think about what he said every Memorial Day and pause to remember. My Memorial Day crafts might not include red poppies, but they will be patriotic crafts.
