Psion settles circumstance about the n word, netbook
The threat to well-liked 'netbook' term has ended with Psion stating that it will "voluntarily withdraw all of its trademark registrations"
Psion, the British company founded by Dr David Potter, "has settled the trademark cancellation and infringement litigation brought in the Northern District of California with Intel concerning its trademark of the expression 'netbook',
Office 2010 Sale," reports Taiwan's DigiTimes.
Psion's official statement says:
The litigation continues to be settled through an amicable agreement beneath which Psion will voluntarily withdraw all of its trademark registrations for 'Netbook'. Neither get together accepted any liability. In light of this amicable arrangement, Psion has agreed to waive all its rights in opposition to third parties in respect of past,
Microsoft Office 2007 Standard, present or long term utilization of the 'Netbook' term.
If there was a monetary settlement also,
Microsoft Office Professional 2010, the terms ended up not disclosed.
Psion caused some a stir in December when it started out sending "cease and desist" letters to sites employing the netbook phrase, which it employed for the Psion NetBook practically a decade ago. But as I mentioned on the time: "it was not a netbook in today's terms: it had been actually a Psion Series seven organiser, a scaled-up Sequence 5, managing EPOC not a scaled down notebook Computer." It is the form of point we will get in touch with a 'smartbook', if Qualcomm gets its way.
Intel and Dell responded by asking for Psion's trademark to become revoked, arguing, as DigiTimes puts it, "that the business was no extended using the mark which has a products at the moment out there, and that the phrase 'netbook' had fallen into generic use."
Psion asked for any jury trial,
Office 2007 Standard Key, delivering income value figures (reproduced at Liliputing) to assistance its claim that it nevertheless offered netbooks,
Office Pro 2010 Key, and that "profits Intel manufactured from its infringement be transfered to Psion."
It's not distinct what, if anything, Psion Teklogix has obtained, apart from some publicity that has not been noticeably favourable. The circumstance hasn't benefited end users or added anything at all on the sum of human happiness. But I expect each of the lawyers involved manufactured a tidy revenue.
