For months all we've heard about is the royal wedding and how spectacular it's going to be. But let's face it ― as amazing as the April 29 wedding of Britain's Prince William and Catherine Middleton may be, no wedding is as important and special as your own.
So, if you want, take some cues and ideas from the royals, but make your wedding what you want it to be.
"I think the biggest bit of advice we give our brides is to be themselves and to not let other people sway their wants and their own style," says Faith Goguen, owner of Olivia's Bridal Boutique in Acushnet.
Gone are the days when wedding gowns came in a single shade of white or ivory. Today's bride can show her own true colors ― or at least hues.
"Varied colored gowns seem to be the new thing this season" says Goguen. "Rather than the traditional white and ivory, brides are looking at champagnes, golds and even bolder colors for their gown choice."
Charlene Colon, owner of Sposabella Bridal in Hyannis prom dresses 2011, agrees: Color is definitely a new trend.
"We are seeing lots of different shades of ivory. There are at least 400 different variations ― everything from a soft pinkish shade to a deep champagne coloration," she says. "About 90 percent of brides are choosing some shade of the ivory spectrum, and even some hints of very light blue."
As color has changed, so has silhouette.
"Romantic fabrics cheap short prom dresses, lots of ruffles, flowers purple prom dresses, lace and tulle are very popular ― soft, flattering side-sweep styles that work for every body type," says Colon. "Ruching, or side-sweeping as many girls call it, hides every bump and bulge on the body. It gives every bride an awesome shape ― that tiny waist we all want. Full skirts as seen in ball gowns are back, as well as 'pickups purple prom dresses 2011,' a trend that began five years ago." (A pickup is a skirt over a ballroom petticoat that is tucked at various intervals in a decorative fashion.)
Goguen says it's also about the fabric. "We are seeing a lot of soft fabrics with layers. Brides seem to be looking for very feminine styles."
Now Bridesmaid dresses, while we all know that everyone will be looking at the bride, what the groom and bridal party are wearing matters, too.
"Suits, rather than tuxes, are popular cheap guest dresses, and it may have something to do with the scaled-back events and more intimate ceremonies we're seeing," says Goguen. "Tuxes are very formal, and while they still are the top choice, suits are definitely becoming more popular."
And A-Line dresses, thankfully, the much-maligned bridesmaid dress has had a makeover.
"Bridesmaids are donning short and simple gowns with clean lines. Gowns that can be reworn are on the top of everyone's list, and it makes sense," says Goguen.
Colon says purple is popular for bridesmaids this year because it looks good on just about everyone. And you can never go wrong with any shade of blue, she adds.
When it comes to color, Colon suggests adding a pop to your look from a sometimes overlooked source ― shoes.
"Shoes in blue, purple, hot pink or teal are the rage for 2011 Formal dresses," Colon says. "Brides are bringing their bridesmaid colors to their shoes; they look ######y and photograph beautifully."
In the end it isn't about the latest trend or what a future princess wears, says Goguen ― it's your day and you should wear a dress that makes you feel like a princess.
"A bride needs to be true to her own style long prom dresses, whether it is a formal sit-down gala with a red gown or an outside, barefoot beach wedding," she says. "Express yourself and don't worry if the color is in season now or if your mother will love the dress as much as you. It's all about you, so make it that way."Topics related articles:
