Many of us will need a trash compactor to fit into our prom attire. At least I will.
When a Michigan woman decided to host a Mom Prom for charity, other groups seeking fun and funds decided to do the same.
Patsy Trantham of the Enka area is active in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. She saw a segment about mom proms on Good Morning America and decided it would be the perfect way to put the oomph back in a girls' night out and raise money for cancer cures.
Her team short prom dresses, the Hominy Friends in Touch, is throwing a retro prom for moms, daughters, even grannies donning goodies.
“We're encouraging women to wear those old prom or bridesmaids dresses, even the wedding dress you no longer have use for,” Trantham said. “The tackier, the better.”
Knowing little girls love to dress up like their mommies, Trantham decided to include them in the Mom Prom mix. The event begins at 6 p.m. April 30 at the Hominy Valley Baptist Church in Candler. Tickets are $10 for moms and $5 for daughters.
“We have a beautiful place for it, and we'll have a catwalk so everyone will be able to show off their dresses,” she said.
Trantham said the Candler prom and another in Charlotte are the only two she's aware of in North Carolina.
“It's going to be so much fun long prom dresses,” she said. “I'm going to my sister's consignment shop to get a dress.”
Everyone has an old dress, she figures. The problem, for me at least, can be fitting into it. Oh, and the memories attached. I'm remembering my 11th grade prom date and cringing as I type. He got tanked and now works as a radiologist.
Size and fit shouldn't be an issue Designer Prom Dresses, Trantham said. A few cuts with scissors, a piece of fabric added here or there, and the dress continues ad infinitum.
“Just zip it as far as it goes and throw on a T-shirt grad dresses 2011,” she said. Problem solved.
Mom Prom will even crown a queen and a princess. Refreshments will be on hand and a DJ to play those favorite songs.

Trantham said her Relay group is doing this to make up for the tragic loss of longtime fund raiser Carolyn Grogan cheap grad dresses, who died last June after her breast cancer metastasized.
“For years she'd been our top fundraiser. She'd raise $8,000 to $10,000 just sending out letters. She was the most inspirational woman.”
While Trantham is hoping to bring in at least half that total grad dresses, she said the Mom Prom is all about having fun and forgetting the troubles in the world for a night.
Her folks will hand out prizes for the tackiest dresses.
Another special event going on at the church the same night is Room at the Inn, in which 10 homeless women spend the night, get a good meal and some pampering.
Trantham is inviting them to the prom and asks anyone with old dresses averaging in sizes 12 to 14 to donate them to the women.
“We want anybody and everybody to come,” she said. “We're decorating in tangerine, lime green and hot pink.”
