Ramirez Joins White Sox, but Why

CLEVELAND – Squealing fans s########## around the corner of the stadium at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, eager to get a glimpse of the visiting star performer. Of course, it was not Manny Ramirez they were trying to see, and not at Progressive Field. The buzz was for a Jonas Brothers concert at Quicken Loans Arena next door.
Ramirez is back in Cleveland as a member of the Chicago White Sox,cheap New York Mets Hats, but he has been here many times since leaving the Indians for Boston after the 2000 season. Ramirez played in two World Series for the Indians, losing both. He played in two more with the Red Sox, winning both.
Can Ramirez help the White Sox win their first since 2005?
“Obviously, Manny’s a Hall of Famer, that goes without saying,” said first baseman Paul Konerko, who is probably overestimating Ramirez’s chances at Cooperstown, considering his 50-game suspension last year. “He’s going to help any lineup because he’s a quality hitter, he can drive in a tough run off a quality pitcher, and he hits right-handers.”
Then Konerko, who is quietly having a tremendous season, felt compelled to add something else.
“We’ve been scoring runs,” he said. “That’s a misconception about our lineup, that we’ve struggled all year. We’ve really hit, if you look at the numbers.”
The numbers say that since June 29, the White Sox lead the major leagues in batting average (.301), on-base percentage (.352), slugging percentage (.468) and runs scored (301, or 5.4 per game). So what were they doing spending about $4 million to get a little over a month of Manny Ramirez?

The change of scenery worked well for Ramirez when he went from Boston to Los Angeles. Did he need one this time?
“He’s here for a reason,” Cora said, translating the answer. “He doesn’t think he needed that, but he’s here for a reason. We’ll see.”
