Girardi Manages in Present While Looking to the Fu

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – When Chad Gaudin started warming up in the 10th inning of the Yankees’ 1-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night,Montreal Expos Hats, I had the same reaction,Philadelphia Phillies Hats, I suspect, as many of you: Where was Joba Chamberlain? Where was Dave Robertson? Indeed, strange things were afoot at the Circle K, err, the Trop.
It was clear that neither was available to pitch. But why? Manager Joe Girardi has a policy, to which he strictly adheres,Atlanta Braves Hats, of not using relievers on three straight days. But Robertson had Sunday off, and Chamberlain had not worked since Friday (though he warmed up Saturday).
As Girardi and the pitching coach Dave Eiland explained,Chicago Cubs Hats sale, both pitchers were told before the game that they had the night off. Robertson has pitched in 7 of the last 16 games, working at least one inning six times. Chamberlain has pitched in 6 of 16, working at least one inning in five of them. Eiland said they were physically fine,St Louis Cardinals Hats, and Girardi said both pitchers would be available Tuesday night.
“It’s not the first time I’ve done it during the season,” Girardi said. “But that doesn’t mean we’re not trying to win the game.”
That, at least, was obvious when Nick Swisher came in to pinch-hit despite an ailing left knee. He limped to first base on the groundout, and on Tuesday he will have another M.R.I.
“We took the M.R.I. before and it said there was nothing,” Swisher said. “But I find that really, really hard to believe.”
For most of the season Girardi has taken a broad perspective when resting players. His goal over the next three weeks is to get everyone – Swisher, Brett Gardner, Andy Pettitte – healthy again leading into the playoffs.
Girardi was brusque with the news media after the game, possibly irritated by any number of things – Gardner’s base-running gaffe, a fourth straight loss, the line of questioning – but, and not for lack of trying, I would love to know whether he would have manipulated the bullpen the same way if the Yankees were not virtually assured of making the playoffs.
If the wild card were likely coming from another division, and if the Yankees and the Rays were fighting for the same postseason berth,Cheap HOT Styles, would Girardi have managed differently?
