Default What's Left of Her Land

In 2009 the UAE became the first Gulf nation to have an official pavilion at the prestigious Venice Biennale. The country is now set to once again showcase contemporary Emirati art at the 54th International Art Exhibition — The Venice Biennale 2011,franklin marshall, which opens tomorrow. The exhibition at the UAE Pavilion is aptly titled Second Time Around and features the work of talented Emirati artists Reem Al Gaith, Abdullah Al Sa'adi and Latifa Bint Maktoum.

The exhibition has been curated by Vasif Kortun, well-known international curator and director of Research and Programmes, louboutin pas cher, SALT, Istanbul. Explaining his curatorial concept, Kortun says: "Rather than contextualise what has become clichés of the international reception of the UAE, Second Time Around refers to the exhibition itself. It does not revolve around a curatorial concept but rather, christian louboutin, the curating derives from the artworks and a set of artistic positions. I looked at the work of many Emirati artists and chose these three artists, franklin and marshall, because they each represent a different set of positions, even though a number of threads tie them together. All three react to the specific context of the UAE but the exhibition does not focus on the way their works reflect this context but rather, franklin et marshall, on the works themselves."

The three artists come from different backgrounds and age groups. They work with different media and offer their individual perspectives on the ethos of the UAE and the changes it is going through. Al Gaith is a young, emerging artist. She has studied Visual Communication at the School of Architecture and Design, American University of Sharjah, mercurial vapor, and her large-scale installations examine changes in the urban and social landscape of the UAE. Her installation at the UAE Pavilion, titled Dubai: What's Left of Her Land (2010), is a visual documentation of the urban transformation of Dubai and the coexistence of the new and the old in the city.

The design of the pavilion complements this approach, chaussure louboutin, with each artist being represented in a separate "island". "We have created an exhibition design that provides three different spaces that are identical in size, where each artist's position can be fully experienced on its own, chaussures de football, while retaining a sense of the whole," Kortun says.
