MARSHALL - It's good to take a little time out for yourself, and even better when it can help out a good cause at the same time. That's what organizers say about tonight's Power of the Purse event, and it seems to be a message that resonates with area residents. The event has grown since its start four years ago, said Teresa Kock, community improvement coordinator with United Way of Southwest Minnesota.
"We're at 105 people right now," Kock said - the biggest turnout the event has had so far. "A lot of groups are coming this year, which is really making this a women's night out."
This year's Power of the Purse event is tonight at the Marshall Golf Club, featuring author, speaker and business coach Elizabeth Hagen. Power of the Purse is sponsored by Women United for Early Childhood, a women's leadership group with the United Way.
"The whole idea behind Women United for Early Childhood was that you have a group of caring women who want to make a difference," said Ruth Ascher, executive director with the United Way. However, she said, "They like to have fun, too."
That combination fit perfectly with the group's choice of speaker. Ascher and Kock said Women United members invited Elizabeth Hagen to speak because of her focus on hope and living confidently.
"People are so busy. They're trying to find that balance" between work, family and personal life, Kock said.
Hagen has a new book out, titled "Now Is Your Time: The Steps to Be Fearless and Extraordinary." It will help form the focus of her talk tonight.
Proceeds from the event, including a silent auction of donated purses(china has a lot of
cheap handbags,such as
women handbags,
cheap puma shoes,
supra shoes,
cheap sunglasses), will go to support childhood literacy programs like the Imagination Library program and parent education workshops. Area support has helped the programs grow, Ascher said.
About 750 new kindergarteners from 20 area schools will receive "Wild About Kindergarten" plastic bags with take-home learning materials, she said. "We're also trying to do different things with parent education and mobile learning events."
