From Paris to Los Gatos, by way of Monte Sereno
Sliver&Chocolate Prom Dresses, 14-year-old Gabrielle Rothschild is a Fisher Middle School student by day and a fashion designer in her spare time. She opens her first sample sale and trunk show later this week when her designs go on sale at Heidi's Boutique
Formal Dresses, a downtown Los Gatos shop that caters to the junior market. That's how Los Gatos fits into her plans.
Paris fashionistas inspire her designs, and since she lives in Monte Sereno, that completes the circle.
Gabrielle has been working for months to complete 25 dresses, blouses, pajamas and a few pairs of shorts that will be included in the show. "There are long gowns
Short Prom Dresses, flouncy short gowns and more casual play dresses
Bridal Dresses," Gabrielle said. One hot pink and black party dress has 14 yards of tulle in the underneath skirt
Designer Prom Dresses, so it's one of the flouncy gowns.
Gabrielle and store owner Heidi Rehbock are still deciding how much to charge for the one-of-a-kind outfits, but Gabrielle says they'll be reasonably priced. "I asked my friends, who are also my models, how much they'd be willing to spend," Gabrielle said. "The prices will vary depending on the cost of the fabric."
Gabrielle taught herself to sew when she was still in grade school. "I started hand sewing at 9 or 10, then I started using my mom's old sewing machine at 11," she said. "When I turned 12, I got a new machine for Christmas."
To some extent, Gabrielle uses commercial patterns that she

incorporates into her designs. "I'm still learning, so I plan to go to design school," she said. "I want to learn the construction end, as well. I can now do the bottom of dresses
Homecoming Dresses, so what I do is sketch it out and then look for a pattern that matches my design. I take out sleeves and add darts, depending on what I've designed." Gabrielle also uses fabric pens to apply extra touches and the waistband of a navy blue party dress is jazzed up with Paris scenes that were applied with a silver sharpie pen. From start to finish, Gabrielle estimates it takes between 10 and 12 hours to complete a dress.
It's quite an accomplishment for a 14-year-old
A-Line Dresses, who is grateful for all the support she's getting. "All my friends are going to come on the 30th
cheap grad dresses," she said. "They're really supportive and excited." Gabrielle says her friends are also patient, since they're the ones who she tests everything out on.
"She's so incredibly enthusiastic, focused and organized," Rehbock said. "This is a fun and unique opportunity for me to support a Los Gatos gal."
Once the trunk show is over
2011 prom dresses, Gabrielle plans to start all over again. "I'll sketch out an entire collection, then buy the fabric and make everything," she said. "No more deadlines. I'm going to take my time."Topics related articles:
