(CNN) -- Authorities shut down a important airport in St. Louis after massive winds from a severe storm caused premonitory damage, minced windows and sent debris raining down on passengers.
The Lambert-St. Louis International Airport is closed indefinitely when officials investigate dispose left backward by a storm that struck approximately 8:15 p.m. Friday, St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay told reporters.
"There was a reported sighting of a tornado. Although that has not been confirmed, that storm caused significant damage to the airport," he said.
Four people were transported to nearby hospitals with injuries, and paramedics treated others at the airport, Slay said. Officials said the injuries arose inferior.
Passengers were hit with flying cup and debris as winds ripped off portion of the roof in the airport's C concourse, CNN affiliate KSDK reported.
"All the windows were busted. ...The airport looks favor a battle zone," Elizabeth Rastberger, 32, told CNN's iReport.
Rastberger said she had been waiting to pick up a friend while the storm kick. After one commander wailed "obtain downstairs," she took cover in a women's toilet with almost 20 others.
"Kids were wailing," she said. "A matron had a busted proboscis. Everyone was too freaked out to speak."
The reported tornado tangled metal and blew out plate-glass windows in the airport's main terminal, witnesses said.
Winds too blew off doors by a baggage-claim space, St. Louis County Police Chief Col. Tim Fitch told reporters.
"It's extraordinary to me that extra human weren't impair," he said.
One witness narrated a chaotic scene appearance the terminal as officials evacuated passengers from at least an aircraft.
"The aircraft was rocking behind and along," said Brett Knewitz of Albuquerque, New Mexico, who was on a airplane that was about to take off from the airport when the storm hit.
Initially officials did not grant evacuated travelers into the airport, he said,

About 50 percent of the windows were thumped out in the airport's cardinal final, airport manager Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge said. But authorities do not believe anybody planes were broke in the storm, she said.
Concourse C is secondhand along American Airlines, AirTran and Cape Air, airport spokesman Jeff Lea said.
The National Weather Service said witnesses deem a hurricane was above the floor as several miles and scrutinized the twister from a spire at the airport.
About 500 people were inside the airport when the storm hit, KSDK reported.
The station also reported that the storm blew the steeple off a mosque and coerced authorities to near expressways.
Local hospitals reported agreeing patients with cuts and bruises.
