How Miriam entered Showbiz:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~
In 1995, just as Miriam was about to complete her nursing course, her friends signed her up for a distinguished local singing contest known as the "14th Annual Singing Contest". During a trial recording session, Miriam was spotted by Capital Artist, who then signed her up as a singer under its flag. With a self-chosen song, Cass Phang's "Waited for Too Long", Miriam triumphed in the singing contest, coming in as the Second Runner's Up. After which, Miriam was sponsored by Capital Artist for a short music course in the States. Upon graduation, Miriam returned to Hong Kong and began her route to stardom.
[News]
Miriam Yeung and Nancy Sit met in the dressing room and when Nancy saw Miriam, she immediately said: "I only saw Ronald today and now I see you, I am afraid you wouldn't say hello to me!" When she said this, Miriam was rather speechless and just laughed as she posed for a photo with Nancy. Later Nancy was asked why she had said this and she replied: "In 'Virtues of Harmony' Ronald tries to date me and we do have some dating scenes, so I asked Miriam if she wanted those photos back!" Miriam responded when she heard this and laughed: "Nancy really is a master, I really have to learn from her to improve my wit, she can silence me with just one sentence!" She adds she does not mind these jokes from Nancy as she finds it a lot of fun!
When Edmond Leung sung his song "Footy Friends", the lyrics were found to have been altered slightly, with 'smashing drinks' being changed to 'shaking hands' and 'drinking beer' changed to 'go for a run' and raising suggestions that the song had been cleaned up after his previous incident involving too much drink. When asked about this, Edmond insisted that it was not related and said: "Don't try to link everything to that incident, there is nothing left to follow up on with that!" He says that the changes to the lyrics were to accommodate the boundaries of television and he had already passed the new lyrics to TVB, but they didn't change the subtitles and this was beyond his control.
TVB tried a new format for the show as they invited three thousand members of the public to join the audience, but only gave them standing space. However, maybe the performances weren't to the taste of the audience or the lack of seating left them all a little tired, so even before the end, half the audience had left and piles of litter could be seen for the cleaning team to tidy up. Faced with such a big audience in their first public performance, the Miss Hong Kong contestants were seemed rather stage struck, but did not make too many mistakes, despite being rather wooden.
News:
Miriam Yeung: 'Three of a Kind is...like a Hollywood-style romantic-comedy.'
Hong Kong singer-actress Miriam Yeung narrates the funny things t.hat happened on the set of her new movie, Three of a Kind, to MICHAEL CHEANG.
IT IS not difficult to spot Miriam Yeung in a crowd. If her pretty face does not give her away, her distinctive purple-dyed hair would. And if you still cannot spot her, try listening for her infectious laughter.
Yeung, who was in Malaysia last week to promote her new movie, Three of a Kind, is a bubbly character. Throughout the press conference in Sunway Resort in Bandar Sunway, Selangor, she answered questions cheerfully despite having just flown in from Hong Kong.
Born in 1974, the former nurse has come a long way since entering show business after winning a singing competition in Hong Kong several years ago. Yeung is now one of the most popular singers, as well as one of the most sought-after actresses in the former British colony.
In Three of a Kind, she plays Sophia, the daughter of Long (Michael Hui), a famous author of Chinese martial arts novels who is struggling to come up with his first book after a 13-year break. Long is over-protective of his daughter who works for playboy Frankie, played by Lau Ching Wan.
According to Yeung, this movie is unlike all the other recent romantic comedies from Hong Kong. “Many of them have a lot of slapstick humour to make people laugh,” she said in Cantonese. “Three of a Kind is different as it is more like a Hollywood-style romantic-comedy. It is more dramatic, and focuses a lot on the relationship between father and daughter, and lovers. It tries to do more than just make people laugh.”
The film marks veteran comedian Hui’s first starring role in a feature film since 1992’s Hero of the Beggars. He is probably best-known for classic movies like The Private Eyes (1976) and Chicken and Duck Talk (1988) as well as being the eldest of the famous Hui Brothers, which included the forlorn-looking Ricky, and singing superstar Sam.
Yeung, who admits to being a fan of Hui’s movies, said that working with him on Three of a Kind made her feel like she was appearing in one of his classic movies. She even managed to pick up some valuable tips after working with the veteran actor, whom she affectionately calls “Papa”.
Working with Lau was also a good experience, especially since it was her first time working with him. “Lau is a real gentleman and an all-rounder. He does not overdo things and does not use many expressions in his acting, but he still delivers his role well,” she said of her co-star.
Yeung said she had a fun experience working on this movie, and she could not help laughing all the time, especially when Hui and Lau were fooling around on set.
On the movie that took one month to shoot, she said: “It was relatively easy for me, but harder for the guys because they had some fight scenes and were required to be hooked up to wires.”
Yeung also had to do some wire stunts in the scene in which Hui’s character imagines himself, Frankie and Sophia as martial arts warriors fighting on top of a tree. That really tested Yeung’s courage. “Compounding my fear was the fact that I have to be hung on a tall tree and it was not even a real tree. I have a fear of heights.”
Fortunately for her, Lau, who has some experience in filming martial arts movies, helped her to do the scenes as well as calm her down by singing to her.
Another memorable experience was when she had to drive a manual four-wheel-drive vehicle on the set. She has been so used to handling automatic cars that she got confused over which pedal is the accelerator!
“The engine died at least four times during the shoot, and there was one part in the movie where instead of me actually driving the car, people were pushing it from behind.”
News:
Miriam went to Malaysia to promote "3 Of A Kind" and attracted a lot of fans. Miriam played games with the fans and one of them won RM$3000 worth of diamond voucher. After Miriam presented the winner with the voucher, she reminded him to buy a diamond ring to make his girlfriend happy. Miriam has never received diamonds as present. But there was once after her hard work, she used her own hard-earned money to buy a small accessory for herself and she felt equally happy.
More News:
Hong Kong singer/actress Miriam Yeung was recently here in KL for a one-day promotional visit in conjunction with the launch of her new movie, Three Of A Kind. Cinema Online managed to catch up with this beautiful and funny actress at Sunway Lagoon Resort Hotel on July 19, where she told us about the shoot and also her fear of heights
How did the director manage to get you involved in this movie?With money? (laughs)
According to Sean Lau, he was conned by the director into joining the production. He mentioned in The Making Of
that the director told him this would be a light-hearted love story, but he ended up having to do stunts!
I think compared to the previous movies Ive done, my character is this time more down to earth. Its a family movie instead of the slapstick comedies I usually do. The guys however were a little more unfortunate, because their characters required them to do some action scenes and they even had to dangle in mid-air at one point.
This movie features three comedians. Was it hard keeping a straight face during the shoot?
Ironically, the shoot was not as comedic as one would imagine it to be. Everyone was very professional on the set, especially since I was working with two veteran actors. When the camera started rolling, everybody got into character, and I was there, trying not to burst out laughing. To tell the truth, I was really nervous during the shoot.
Whats the difference between promoting a movie and promoting your new album?
They are both still work, but promoting a movie is more like promoting a product that everybody has worked so hard to put together. Its more about teamwork. I guess movie promos are more happening and diverse because every actor will have their own different on-set experience to share, but the album promo is mostly about me.
So how different are you when you are doing a movie promo and doing an album promo?
I think Im usually more polite when it comes to album promos. I think movie promos tend to sometimes get out of hand, because when a bunch of actors get together to promote a movie, especially a comedy, theres no telling what will happen. Im usually well behaved during my album promos. Actually, every time I do a promo, its a chance for me to meet the man of my dreams. (laughs)
Okay
have you seen any guy in Malaysia who interests you yet? Well, actually no. Too bad the people Ive met so far are the security personnel.
But wouldnt they make the ideal guy, since they give a sense of security?
(laughs) Oh yes, they do give me a sense of security
but they also come and go in a flash. Take this for example, the first thing they say when they see me: Quick, in the car now! and when I reach my hotel, Get out of the car now! Then when my trip is over, its - Hurry, time to board the plane, bye! (laughs)
Did you manage to learn anything from Michael Hui?
Of course, since hes one of Hong Kongs veteran actors. I realised that doing a comedy is not easy because you have to have the right timing to deliver the punch line. In Michaels case, he actually captures the timing very well and gives the audience the right impact.
What about Sean Lau?
This is also my first time working with Sean. The way he acts is different from Michael. He can just give you a punch line without even acting funny. He can also get into character real fast.
What was your worst experience while filming this movie?
Actually there was a martial arts scene in the movie, but I didnt know that they were going to shoot it that day. So when they told me that they were going to hoist me up in mid-air on a wire, I thought I just needed to pretend to fly for one round and that was it. However when I was on the set, the director came up to me and told me, when I say 3, 2, 1, action, well pull you straight up to the top of a tree, and all you have to do is a little sword-playing action and that will be all. When I looked around, I realised that there were no trees there that were 3 or 4 feet high! So I asked the director, and he pointed to the tree behind me, which was more than 10 feet high! To make things worse, he told me that the tree was not real and I flipped! When I reached the top, I realised that they pulled me too high and my feet couldnt touch the branch of the tree. I am really afraid of heights, so I ended up screaming my lungs out all the way. Sean Lau even told me to stay calm, but when youre being dangled on a wire, 10 feet high in the air, at 2am in the morning, its really hard to stay calm. (laughs)
Are there any memorable scenes in the movie that you think the audience should take note of?
Theres a scene in the movie where I have to drive a car in the desert, and overseas, the cars are left hand-drive and use a manual gear. Of course when I took my driving test, it was actually a manual-drive test, but for the past 10 years, I have never driven a single manual car! So when I was put into a manual car and told that all I need to do is shift to gear one and step on the accelerator, I gave them this blank look and asked them why there were three pedals! (laughs) In the movie itll look as if Im a great driver, but actually, there were a few shots where there were people actually pushing the car, because I couldnt get the thing to move! I hope on the final print they remember to digitally remove the hands that were pushing the car! (laughs)
Catch Miriam Yeung, Sean Lau and Michael Hui in Three Of A Kind, now showing in cinemas nationwide.
some news on our Miri =)
lol wut is she doing in that pic? hehe so cute!
(8/9/2004) Miriam Yeung Chin Wa yesterday held an autograph session for her new disk. Over 1,000 people came in support and she even raised HK$50,000 for Doctors Without Borders. She added another HK$50,000 donation to give a total sum of 100,000.
Chin Wa and former boyfriend Ronald Cheng Chung Kei have broken up for years. Although they are frequently rumored to be back together, no proof has surfaced. Chin Wa yesterday clearly stated that she and Ronald are just friends. "I don't lie. If I am dating people will definitely run into me. If it's real my reaction won't be like this." Chin Wa honestly said that Ronald is a trustworthy friend. "To be 'just friends' is very hard, so I cherish the friendship. As for what the future may bring I will go along with it because relationship issues are beyond anyone's control."
[The Sun]
After an absence of six years, TVB's "Anniversary Music Special" will be back this year, riding on the revolution of "Jade Solid Gold". The show has been agreed to be aired on 31st October and will start the celebrations for the TVB anniversary in November. In its day, the show brought out all of TVB's contracted singing stars, such as 'the Four Heavenly Kings', Faye Wong and Sammi Cheng, so to ensure that it doesn't seem quiet in comparison this year, TVB has been eagerly preparing and negotiating hard with the record companies, also inviting singers from the mainland and Taiwan so that over a hundred singers will be there for the event.
Many record companies have responded enthusiastically to TVB's plans and Universal's executive Chu Kwok Ching said: "It is definitely a good thing, now that TVB is starting to focus on music, so we will definitely support this." Gold Medal spokesperson Miss Chan says: "The anniversary is a large show that only happens once a year, so if they do it again, then I am sure all the stars will take part." As there will be huge number of stars present, then the role of team captain for the male and female teams on the night is under great speculation and TVB are currently thinking hard about it. As for the format, it will be based highly around the music, with a live accompaniment and just like in the past, it will challenge the singing ability of the singers.
Also, Miriam Yeung was recording the commentary for "Number 1 Animal Olympics" earlier, working opposite famed sports commentator Ng Fong Wing. She said excitedly: "This is the first time we have worked together and so I'll 'hand over to him' anyway." [Em's note: This joke plays on the pun that the news anchors are always 'handing over' to Ng to talk about sport.] Miriam also reveals that at the celebratory party for her good friend Mark Lui's concert earlier, she had food poisoning after eating some sushi: "My ex-colleague gave me some medicine, so I was okay after going to the toilet."
Yeahhhh, well, there's going to be a Miriam Yeung Concert in Sydney (Australia, that is)..
So just wondering if anyone was going?
I think the tickets are the same price as the Joey concert tickets:
128, 88, 48.
(Correct me if I'm wrong, ne..)
And the concert's on the first friday of the school holidays, it's October the 1st...
So, anyone going to go?
=]
I love Miriam!! :lol?: i'm considering her concert, because i'm not sure if i'll have enough time to gather up the *bling* *bling* ... keke cash dat is! ^^
i love miriam as a actress more than a singer, because i somethimes think she can't really sing many notes... ' but never the less! i wanna go! get her autograph... =] cause she really sounds like a nice person!! keke... and guest star is hot! haha ^^
the tickets are on sale right now! better get them fast!! ^^
the thing i didn't like about this concert was that they made it so close to Joey's concert... there should have been more of a "gap" because it's just 5 weeks down the road... >____<
Viva kareoki as i heard... had the first three rows of every section! so i'm going to go there to get my Miriam tickets!! ^^
OCT 1st. First Friday of the holidays. =] gogogo! ^^
i think i would go if i have time. but it's just a concert. i don't go to concerts... it's all crowded with plp. and you'll have to waste a lotta money just to hear plp sing. just buy their cds! sorry, but thi sis just my opinion. i think concerts are a waste of money. no offense to anyone. i guess if it's like a really really really, extereemely popular and famous singer who's performing, then i would go. haha. i think sam hui's concert's crazy! a lot of plp went. i don't get it... maybe it's bc i'm not his fan. but wasting money to hear an old guy sing??? oooookkkk....
well, i heard a lotta plp loved his songs. i heard some of the songs and they are pretyt interesting.. in the sense of lyrics that are written. quite hilarious. but still... old guy sinigng?? anyway, i figured that a lot of the singers that quitted are coming back.
i guess it's bc a few of the best singers died so this is the best time for the old singers to come back and make some money!!! smart plp nowadays.
i feel like everybody could be a singer. i mean, there ARE plp out there who can sing like really good, it's just either they don't have a chance to become famous or they just don't have the body and the looks. it's really sad how m any plp judge singers by their looks.... what relaly matters is their voice and how they sing. u see??? the point is that a lotta plp buy CDs of singers is to listen to the songs cause they sound good or they love the voice of the singer. but if people really like to buy CDs, bc the singer is pretty or handsome but don't sing well, i realy think it would be a waste of money. anyhow, singing is a talent that many people has. it's just that if you sing relaly good, you can just record ur own songs and listen to urself sing. save money!!! $$$$$
free for any comments. bye! bye! bye! buh byez!
***haha**
[Oriental Daily, The Sun & Ta Kung Pao 08/09/04]
Fifty Chinese gold-medallists gathered at the Hong Kong stadium last night for "The Pride of the Chinese - Olympic Stars Extravaganza" performance. From noon onwards, the performers such as Miriam Yeung and Joey Yung each took their turn on the stage for rehearsals and the fifty athletes arrived at around 4pm to prepare for the evening's performance. However, their tight schedules since arriving in Hong Kong had left them rather tired and many of the sporting stars could be seen catching a quick nap on the bus. Among the stars from sport and music taking part were 'diving prince' Tian Liang, 'diving princess' Guo Jing Jing, 'king of hurdles' Liu Xiang, Alan Tam, Hacken Lee, Kelly Chen, Andy Hui, Joey Yung, Miriam Yeung, Leo Ku and Alex Fong.
During rehearsals, singers and athletes had to give their all and among them "King of Hurdles" Liu Xiang worked well with Leo Ku in their duet, with Liu giving a very professional performance. In comparison, the table tennis representatives and opening act: Ma Lin and Chen Qi from China and Lee Ching and Ko Lai Chak from Hong Kong seemed rather nervous and sung out of tune, showing that even the bravest sporting hero can suffer from stage fright! Whilst singing the song 'Girl with Wings' with Joey Yung, Luo Xuejuan found it difficult to get into key, but Joey helped her out and the final result was not bad at all. Afterwards, Joey said: "I feel she has worked very hard as she was desperately trying to learn all the words in the afternoon. I was holding her hand whilst we were singing and I felt like a big sister to her."
Among all the stars, Liu Xiang was the most popular person of the show and the applause from the audience raised the roof as he duetted with Leo Ku, who was wearing a Chinese team kit, singing "Hao Xiang Hao Xiang" and then going on to comment on the friendliness of Hong Kong girls. Leo changed a line of the lyrics to say "Liu Xiang's legs are really long", making Liu turn to check on the length of his legs and causing some screams from the audience.
Of the singers taking part, Hacken Lee and Miriam Yeung were both suffering from illness and Miriam was steadily losing her voice during rehearsals and she was first to 'surrender' to the press later,
ghd flat iron, saying: "My voice was croaky earlier during the awards ceremony in Taiwan and I had to take tablets to regain my voice then and I had used all my backup. I will have an injection and take medication for tonight's performance, but I have prepared a tape, so if I really can't do it then I will have to mime." Eventually at the performance, Miriam did have to use the tape and mime to the music for her performance because she felt that this was better than singing out of tune. She indicates that she chose a red outfit for the show because red represents China. When asked if she would be having her photo taken with the athletes, she says: "I tried to borrow a 7 megapixel digital camera from a friend, but she was worried about getting it wet in the rain and would not lend it to me!"
An amusing incident occurred as Kelly and Andy were waiting backstage when tennis sensations Li Ting and Sun Tiantian arrived to have their photos taken with them. After the girls had left, Kelly and Andy noticed that one of them had left behind a Chinese Olympic Team jacket and as the two started playfully fighting over who would claim the jacket, Sun arrived and said: "Sorry I can't give you the jacket, I have to take it with me!" leaving them rather red faced. Also, as Kelly stepped onto the stage, she spoke into the microphone, saying: "Has everyone had dinner yet?" and causing a few laughs.
This year's Miss Hong Kong winner Kate Tsui's performance as an MC was disastrous because as well as fluffing her lines during many of the interview sections, the worst mistake was during the interview for diving stars Lao Lishi and Li Ting, she pushed aside Wu Minxia. Luckily she realised her mistake immediately and apologised to her, but this left her rather embarrassed. Veteran MC Nat Chan also slipped up as he misread Ko Lai Chak's name as Ko Lai Ching and then totally forgot to introduce Lee Ching.
Although the show went on for an extra fifteen minutes longer than planned, TVB dare not cut the show for fear of inciting the wrath of the audience. Instead, "Twin of Brothers" was aired later than planned. Producer Chan Chi Kau indicated that miming was acceptable for the show because the size of the venue meant that it was safer than risking sound problems." In order to provide even more coverage of the athletes, TVB Jade will be airing the demonstration table tennis, badminton and diving programmes this afternoon and TVB Pearl will be showing volleyball and some highlights from the matches.
News
Miriam Yeung Chin Wa earlier appeared as a mail delivery person in her new diet tea ad campaign. "When I was little I saw the mailman delivering letters. The bag was big and heavy and he has to deliver rain or shine. I thought they were great. I even thought about becoming a mail delivery person." Chin Wa also said that she had different feelings when she waited for the mail to come. She would be very happy when she got mail but very disappointing when she did not. Now the experience has somewhat helped with her acting and singing.
Miriam Yeung has been shooting the music video of her new song "Small City, Big Matter" the past couple of days. Kevin Cheng plays Miriam's boyfriend in the video. Although this is their first time working together, they are asked by the director to "appear madly in love" as they hug and kiss in the kitchen, on the balcony, and even in the bathroom! Fortunately, they are both professionals, and they manage to pull the scenes off.
When asked if she felt embarrassed, Miriam said, "No, I'm used to hugging handsome men! Last time I worked with Daniel Wu, we also hugged a lot. But I'd say I hugged Kevin even more this time around."
One of the funny anecdotes was that Miriam fell asleep on Kevin's chest during shooting the other day because she was too tired. Apparently, she was supposed to put her head on his chest to have an intimate talk. Instead, she got too comfy there and fell asleep. When asked to comment, Miriam laughed, "He has such a broad chest! I bet he goes to gym all the time!"
[Ta Kung Pao, 2004-09-19]
Miriam Yeung, Edmond Leung and Jade Kwan were shooting a children's program last night about protecting teeth. It brought back some painful memories for Miriam, as she explained, "My teeth weren't straight in my adolescent years, so I had to wear the steel to get them back in shape. Whenever I went to parties and tried to know boys, they were always scared off because of my steel teeth."
Since "War And Beauty" started airing, Miriam has been following it every night. She managed to do the same last night, although working. She couldn't stop praising Sheren Tang, Charmaine Sheh, Maggie Cheung and other cast members for their brilliant performances. When Miriam was told most of the leading ladies would die in the end, she said disappointedly, "They all die? How sad!" Asked if she would shoot TVB serials again since she likes them so much, she answered,
ghd precious, "If I can act as well as they (the actresses in WAB) do, I sure will!"
