Have you seen Versace’s spring advertising campaign? Featuring the fabulously feminine January Jones ― who plays Betty Draper in hit AMC series Mad Men ― these striking Mario Testino images encapsulate all that is good about the ’50s and ’60s-inspired trend this spring.
Recently, the catwalks have been crawling with sultry hourglass shapes that celebrate all that is magnificent about the female form.
Think sharp Jackie O tailoring, nipped-in Marilyn Monroe waists, a drop of Grace Kelly sophistication, and oodles of Betty Draper-inspired cuts. And this season’s accessories happily reflect this stylish swing, too.
“It’s about celebrating the female silhouette Sliver prom dresses,” explained Sears’ brand and trend director Cynthia Florek.
“It continues to be very popular due to the return of classic dressing. We are craving the nostalgia of a time when women looked classy and polished.”
It’s an uberfemininity that defies recent Cheap Prom Dresses, more androgynous styling, according to jewelry designer Kari Staten of Zuka Artful Accessories.
“I think it’s about going back to that era when there was such elegance to the way women dressed,” she said. “Icons like Grace Kelly and Jackie Kennedy paved the way for that demure style.
“For accessories, keep it simple and pretty this season. My collection is all about soft blush pink, rose quartz, pink coral and a dab of green. They’re cheery colours ― like a 1950s picnic.”
It’s a sweet accessories trend with a new twist cocktail dresses petite, and the icing on the cake is a modern take on that classic ’50s and ’60s staple: the pearl necklace.
“The classic pearl necklace is one of the most important style highlights of the era ― sweet, delicate and classic,” said jewelry designer Anat Basanta.
“However prom Dresses, I don’t think we want to simply go back and totally replicate the style of the period. After all, we women have come a very long way. We are so much more empowered, and we want our jewelry to express that part of our lives as well.
“A thoughtfully designed beaded necklace connects to this classically feminine retro style Mermaid dresses, but it does so in a modern way.
. . . It’s still classic, but with a bit more punch to it.”
Draper certainly would approve, as she would of this season’s firmly feminine take on eyewear.
“For women in particular, there is a ######iness to retro eyewear ― that sort of ‘nerdy librarian morphs into ######y siren by taking off her specs and letting down her hair’ fantasy,” explained Nada Vuksic of Gastown’s Bruce Eyewear.
“Look for collections that are reissuing actual models from their early collection, like Oliver Goldsmith. Think Audrey Hepburn and finish the look with a scarf or a ######y twin set.”
Crissi Giamos of Town Shoes explained that Mad Men has influenced this spring’s footwear Bridesmaid dresses, too: “This look is a combination of Marilyn Monroe and Jackie O. We have ######y vixen stiletto heels like Marilyn’s, and prim and proper kitten heels, like Jackie’s.
“Must-haves include pointy kitten-heel pumps, which are a key look for this era. Hand-held ladylike bags complete the outfit White prom dresses, especially when being held with gloves.”
Kitten heels provide the perfect accent to the knee-length capped-sleeve button-down dresses recommended by Malene Grotrian of Malene Grotrian Design.
Grotrian’s spring collection colours are a neutral palette and the silhouette is a high-waisted hourglass shape.
“Choosing a soft neutral colour gives the opportunity to accessorize with bold jewelry, scarves Ball gowns, gloves and clutches,” explained Grotrian.
“I think that the women who are attracted to this type of style love to feel the elegance of the fashions that were inspired by Jackie Kennedy. The style is so timeless; it truly accentuates the female body.”
