JapanToday: Japan News and Discussion ジャパントゥデイ:日本のニュースを英語で読む Japan News and Discussion print MAEBASHI — The governments of three prefectures neighboring Fukushima began preparations Tuesday to take in people fleeing radiation leaks at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant, as evacuees voiced concern over the unfolding crisis. In the city of Yonezawa, Yamagata, many of those arriving are seeking medical tests to check the radiation levels to which they have been exposed, officials said. At the city’s public health centers, officials are giving priority to evacuees who have fled areas within a 20-kilometer radius of the nuclear plant battling to contain high-level radiation leaks. The Yamagata prefectural government started compiling a list of facilities that can be used as shelters, and the Gunma government said it is ready to take in evacuees at some 190 public housing units. Some municipal governments have already started accepting them. ‘‘We are working to determine how many evacuees we can take in and which facilities we can use as shelters,’’ an official at the Tochigi prefectural government said. Some evacuees have already arrived in the city of Nasushiobara, which said it can take in 50 evacuees for now. At a gym in Tamura, Fukushima Prefecture, some 30 km west of the plant, dozens of the some 600 evacuees sheltered there were in front of the TV watching the latest developments. ‘‘All of us would like to return to the towns where we were born and raised, even if it may take a year, or three years, before we can,’’ a 51-year-old man said. A woman at the parking lot of an inn in the Bandai-Atami hot-spa resort in the city said, ‘‘Although I fled here in my car with my pet, no accommodation facilities are open.’‘ ‘‘It’s cold here, but I have no choice but to sleep outdoors tonight,Office 2007 Standard,’’ she said. Kimiyo Watanabe, a 44-year-old official at a Tamura-based group home for the elderly and disabled, said,Microsoft Office 2007 Ultimate Keygen, ‘‘How can we evacuate physically-disabled people here? Are conditions at shelters all right?’‘ ‘‘I myself have to evacuate, while taking care of people at our group home,Office 2010 Home And Business,’’ she said. Some 5,000 evacuees are now staying at 11 shelters in Kawamata, Fukushima Prefecture, which is located just outside the 20-km exclusion zone that the central government has imposed around the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant. An official at the Kawamata town government said it has instructed these evacuees to stay inside the shelters by taking into consideration ‘‘the worst case scenario.’‘ Mitsumasa Sato, an official at the town’s disaster countermeasure headquarters, said,Microsoft Office 2007 Enterprise, ‘‘Even if we wanted to help evacuees flee farther,Microsoft Office 2007 Professional Activation Key, it is difficult. For a start, we don’t have gasoline.’’
