LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Matt Schaub threw for 497 yards. Donovan McNabb threw for 426.
Needless to say, the last team to have the ball won the game.
Neil Rackers Jersey kicked a 35–yard field goal with 3:24 left in overtime, and Matt Schaub's 497 set a franchise record Sunday as the Houston Texans improved to 2–0 with a 30–27 win over the Washington Redskins.
Schaub moved the Texans 41 yards in seven plays on the winning drive, with Joel Dreessen making a leaping, turnaround grab of a 28–yard pass to move the ball to the Washington 18 to set up Neil Rackers Jersey' kick.
Schaub completed 38 of 52 passes with three touchdowns and one interception for the Texans, who overcame a 27–10 deficit late in the third quarter to give the team wins in its first two games of the season for only the second time in team history. Andre Johnson had 158 yards receiving and tied a career high with 12 catches, including a touchdown. Kevin Walter caught 11 passes for 144 yards with one score.
Arian Foster, who rushed for 231 yards in the Texans' win over Indianapolis, had 69 yards on 19 carries and caught three passes for 69 yards.
Both quarterbacks threw for more than 400 yards, the first time that's happened in an NFL game since 1994. McNabb completed 28 of 38 passes for 426 yards with one touchdown for the Redskins, who are 1–1 under new coach Mike Shanahan.
The Texans won the coin toss to get the ball at the start of overtime and moved to the Washington 34. But coach Gary Kubiak opted to punt rather than try a 52–yard field goal. The punt went for a touchback, giving Washington the ball at its own 20.
The Redskins then drove to the Houston 34 — the same yard line as the Texans — and Shanahan opted to try the field goal. Graham Gano made the first attempt, but it didn't count because Kubiak called timeout just before the snap. Gano's second try was wide right, putting the ball back in Schaub's hands for the winning drive.
The Redskins had a chance to take a 30–20 lead with 6:36 to play in regulation, but Bernard Pollard blocked Gano's 29–yard field–goal attempt, keeping the Texans within one score. Houston then tied the game with an 81–yard drive that started with 3:16 remaining. Schaub converted a third–and–10 with a 29–yard pass to Johnson, who had returned to the game after hurting his right ankle in the third quarter.
That was Johnson's 600th career reception, and No. 601 was a gem. On a fourth–and–10 desperation throw by Schaub, Johnson outjumped safety Reed Doughty in the end zone to snag a 34–yard touchdown pass that tied the game at 27 with 2:03 to play.
McNabb and Schaub put on an offensive show in the first half — combining to go 27 for 34 for 404 yards — but the yards didn't always translate into maximum points. The Redskins' two promising drives stalled quickly, ending in field goals instead of touchdowns, and the Texans drove inside the Washington 25 before a sack led to a 47–yard field goal attempt missed wide right by Neil Rackers Jersey.
Schaub's 5–yard pass to Jacoby Jones gave the Texans a 7–6 lead on the first play of the second quarter, but McNabb then cranked it up. He hit 38–year–old Joey Galloway deep over the middle for 62 yards on the first play of the next drive, moving the ball to the Houston 11. Clinton Portis had his first 1–yard touchdown run four plays later to give the Redskins the lead.
Late in the half, McNabb spotted Fred Davis wide open in the left flat, and the tight end rambled to the 1 — another 62–yard gain. Portis got his second 1–yard score two plays later, sending the Redskins to the locker room with a 20–7 lead. An example of how tepid Washington's offense has been lately: The 20 points by the team is the most in any half by the team since 2007.
McNabb led a superb third–quarter, 92–yard drive with a statistical fluke thrown in. He went 6 for 7, with completions to six different receivers, for 101 yards — made possible because of a sack and a penalty that moved the Redskins back. He capped it by hitting Chris Cooley for a 22–yard score to give Washington a 27–10 lead.
But Schaub brought the Texans back. A third–and–15 short pass to Foster went for 50 yards, setting up a 6–yard touchdown pass to Walter on last play of the third quarter to cut the Redskins' lead to 27–17. A 35–yard completion to Walter led to a 43–yard field goal by Neil Rackers Jersey with 11:10 to go to make the score 27–20.
