Ham came to be widely depicted as a black person.

This means that the differences in our colors, plants colors, animals' colors are signs from the Great Creator, Allah the Almighty.
Who is the gloried of you in the sight of Allah?
[Surah 49: 13] "O mankind! We created you from a single (couple) of a man and a feminine, and made you into countries and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may disdain each other). Verily the most honored of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And Allah has full Knowledge and is well-acquainted (with all things)."
The differentiation between individuals in the Sight of Allah is based on their levels of piety,

"O People, loan me an alert ear, for I don't understand if, afterward this year, I shall ever be through you repeatedly. Therefore listen to what I am mentioning to you carefully and bring,0 these words to those who could not be present here today.
O People, it is true that you have certain rights with regard to your women, yet they likewise have right over you. If they obey by your right then to them belongs the right to be fed and clothed in kindness. Do remedy your women well and be variety to them for they are your partners and committed assistants.
All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action. You know thatevery Muslim is the brother of another Muslim. Remember, one day you will appear before Allah and answer for your deeds. So beware, do not astray from the way of righteousness after I am gone."

The first view was in the Christian countries e.g. USA and Europe where Colorism was a huge problem.
