Very occasionally,
Puma Ferrari Future Cat GT, you get the news first if you follow me on Twitter. I had just reported hearing that Ed Miliband had spoken to Nick Brown,
thomas sabo charms, Labour’s chief whip (right),

As you know I intended to stand for election as chief whip. During our meeting earlier today you indicated that you wished me not to do so. The chief whip must have the full confidence of the party leader. I fully respect your wishes and will no longer be standing for the position. I would like to thank colleagues in the PLP [Parliamentary Labour Party] for their support during my time as chief whip.
The Parliamentary Labour Party has just voted to approve new rules for Shadow Cabinet elections,

Now Ed Miliband is taking on the forces in the parliamentary party who organised for his election as leader.
Nick Brown has been the organiser-in-chief of the Brownite faction since the Late Cretaceous. Tony Blair records in A Journey (p219) why he sacked him as chief whip in 1998:
I knew he was more or less continually working for Gordon and against me,

For Ed Miliband to turn against him now is remarkable evidence of the rupture of the Brownites at their very moment of victory,

It is what David Miliband surely would have done had he become leader; surprising that Ed has realised that he has to face down Nick Brown too.
Update: There were suggestions that the idea of ditching Nick Brown as chief whip first arose because – it was reported earlier this week – David Miliband had made it a condition of his possible continuation in the Shadow Cabinet. I’m told that there is no truth in such reports.
