Stockport County were once again left embarrassed by neighbours Macclesfield City soon after they ran out 4-1 winners at Edgeley Park on Saturday to leave the Hatters Soccer League standing hanging by a thread.
Last weekend’s victory over Bury had given fans a renewed sense of optimism about surviving in League Two but another crushing defeat brought back memories of Boxing Day 2006 and saw County plunge deeper into trouble in the relegation zone.
Making two changes from the side that beat Bury, Peter Ward brought in new loan signings Ryan Doble and James Wallace for their debuts, with Adam Griffin and David Poole the unlucky players to make way.
Despite only signing on Friday, Wallace immediately looked at ease in his new surroundings, having the first effort on goal of the afternoon. His long range effort however was straight at Macc keeper Jose Veiga.
The Hatters continued to make all the early running, with Doble, Matt Paterson and Anthony Elding all having efforts that failed to test Veiga.
Their hard work paid off just before the half hour mark. A loose ball fell to the impressive Wallace who curled an unstoppable 25-yard shot into the top corner to give County a deserved lead.
As has been the case so often this season though the lead lasted all of a few minutes. Anthony Elding’s poor attempt at holding the ball up on the halfway line saw the ball fall to Izak Reid who was given time to hit a low drive past Matt Glennon into the corner of the net.
The goal lifted the Silkmen, with Peter Ward afterwards saying the equaliser drained the confidence out of his players. Macc began to take control of the game with Matty Hamshaw and Paul Bolland both going close just before the break.
Whatever Macc boss Gary Simpson said to his players at half-time clearly had the desired effort as they came out fighting in the second half and took the lead in the 47th minute.
Mark Lynch was passed with ease by Emile Sinclair who got to the byline before laying the ball off to Hamshaw. His effort was blatantly handled by defender Alan Goodall but the loose ball fell to Tyrone Barnett who dispatched the ball into the net before referee Carl Boyeson could blow for a penalty.
Sinclair should have added his name to the scoresheet moments later when he was put through on goal by Paul Bolland but he lost his composure and rolled the ball wide of the goal.
It didn’t matter though as the Silkmen made the game safe on the hour mark. Matt Hamshaw, who enjoyed an excellent game against his former employers whipped in a dangerous free-kick that Hatters skipper Paul Turnbull could only head into his own net.
County fell to pieces following the two goals and never looked like getting back into the game. Hamza Bencherif added a fourth after Tyrone Barnett’s cut back as the scoreline threatened to get embarrassing.
Peter Ward’s side though managed to play out the final 20 minutes without conceding once again and nearly pulled one back when Adam Griffin’s low drive evaded the dive of Jose Veiga but luck was on his side as he just managed to stop the ball crossing the line.
James Wallace also went close with another long range effort but it was too little,Office 2010 Sale, too late and Macc had finally ended their Edgeley Park hoodoo to earn a vital three points and depart the Hatters in real danger of dropping out of the Football League.
