Lorraine Candy, editor of Elle , observes: "Now she's set to become one of Britain's most iconic women, it will be her duty to dress better. Fashion is our country's second-biggest industry and it will need her support. She needs to become a role model in the way Samantha Cameron has."

Life as a Chelsea girl followed. By day she was clad in the Jigsaw and Kew staples that came courtesy of her fleeting role as an accessories buyer-cum-poster girl for the former. Her penchant was for floral frocks, kitten heels, limp cardigans, and nip-waisted jackets. It was a style not unlike that of her mother, Carole - a curious icon for a 24-year-old girl. Kate became an enthusiast of Katherine Hooker, the Fulham coat and jacket specialist, donning one of Hooker's coats for the 2006 Gold Cup, teamed with a mink hat.
With the exception of 2008's roller-girl debacle, Middleton has been a cautious, painfully immaculate dresser in a manner that might be deemed conservative for a Tunbridge Wells school run. For a girl of 28, it suggests a case of fashion constipation. Not since Catherine Zeta Jones gained two decades to close the gap on Michael Douglas has there been such a brazen display of lamb dressed as mutton. As with Diana at her engagement, fashion template she is not.
However, she has since had the opportunity to relax into a polished, Windsor-pleasing nouveau-Sloane guise which, with the revived interest in heritage materials,tod's outlet, is coincidentally very au courant ; that "coincidentally" cannot bear too much emphasis. Even as a teen,abercrombie fitch sale, our duchess-in-waiting was a conservative dresser.
Instead, Kate is obsessive-compulsive spick and span. Her stalwarts - which she sports incessantly - are rubber-chicken-circuit frocks, trad blazers, tights with a tan, Sloanesville knee boots, and fascinator after wretched fascinator - proof that you can take the girl out of Jigsaw, but you can't take Jigsaw out of the girl.

Kate Middleton has always dressed cautiously. Now she can afford to have fun, says Hannah Betts.
As for Kate, being the embodiment of a damage limitation policy does not a fashion diva make - at least, not yet. There will be everything to play for in the coming months.

At St Andrews, Kate sported the Fulham-by-Sea jeans Puffa and pashmina combo favoured by students to beat the haar, the local mist. Her own haar was not groomed, her look unstudied. However, it was here, at 21,nhl jersey, that she first indicated an interest in fashion, baring her briefs in a risqué charity catwalk appearance.

Make-up artist Mary Greenwell enthuses: "I'm so happy he met her when she was natural, bubbly,beats by dre headphones, slightly puppy-fatty and beautiful. But she's certainly become more of a lady in the past few months. There's no huge difference in her make-up, but it's more polished."
Middleton's hair is her crowning glory - long, lustrous, and preposterously shiny. Celebrity hairdresser Nicky Clarke says: "Kate has had a typical, non-offensive look that has never been too scary, but not much to shout about either. It's a simple, shire girl kind of look. Wedding hair depends on the dress, but it does need to be a little more formal, kept in proportion. You can't just get by with a blow-dry."
Gemma Williamson, a Marlborough College contemporary, recalled: "Kate never wore particularly fashionable or revealing clothes, just jeans and jumpers with discreet pearl earrings. She couldn't have been less obvious - she hardly even wore make-up."

By dark, as she held court at Boujis and Mahiki, we watched her metamorphose into something slinkier, courtesy of Holland Park fashion consultant Leesa Whisker. Hits included the ￡354 turquoise dress by US designer BCBGMaxAzria. From this period dates her love of Issa, the Chelsea-based label run by Brazilian designer Daniella "Issa" Helayel,hogan sneakers, creator of yesterday's engagement number, who is tipped to fashion what is already breathlessly being referred to as The Dress.

Yesterday's announcement outfit was a case in point. Ms Middleton - lofty-haired and resplendent in Diana's Madonna blue, just as she has taken on her predecessor's ring - resembled a Sloane Cheryl Cole, as if she had landed a L'Oréal contract rather than a royal engagement. As ever, the thinking appears to have been not "What would I enjoy wearing?" but "How would this sit on a commemorative plate"?

Kate's playing-it-safe strategy has been her genius. She has proved that, while she may not yet be "one of us", she is not "one of them": the kind of fashion maven the House of Windsor has learnt to view with alarm. Diana's manipulation of her image gave her a global reach that put her beyond the authority of The Firm. Wallis Simpson's fashionista status could be taken as the symbol of her amorality - and penchant for a uniform.
The tabloids called her "Waity Katie" and her wardrobe reflects this spirit of a long and somewhat arduous game. Miss Middleton has played it scrupulously safe, with nothing fashiony to frighten the horses - or potential in-laws. Ms Middleton captured her Prince's attention when she slinked down a student catwalk in her underwear, and kept him keen with sundry nightclub finery.
